If you’re looking for an exciting, fast-paced job working in technology, where no two days are ever quite the same, project management could be the career of your dreams. Project management specialists leverage their exceptional communication and time management skills to ensure that a company’s project teams are acting in alignment with each other and with organizational needs. To accomplish this, PMs build out teams, mitigate risks, manage project budgets, and much more.

The project management career path is an excellent choice if you have a high degree of technical ability, but don’t plan on making coding your full-time day job. But don’t worry about getting bored — ever-changing organizational priorities and needs will ensure that you’ll still find plenty on your plate. Project management roles, for those who can keep on top of the many responsibilities involved, are very rewarding positions that can lead to incredible innovations in both technology and processes.

Why become a project manager?

Working as a project manager is a great way to join the world of tech without having to learn multiple programming languages or work your way up from customer support roles. There are companies running all kinds of projects in support of their next big moves, and they aren’t all in IT — choice time! Where will you specialize?

IT project managers

If you’re really into technology and all things technical in nature, an IT project manager role could be your best fit. You’ll lead skilled teams of software developers from project kickoff to launch day, keeping everyone in alignment and on time. If you can code, but don’t want to do it 24/7, step on up!

Marketing project managers

If you’re more on the creative side, consider a PM position that will let you flex those talents! Working as a marketing project manager lets you plan and run marketing projects, which helps to drive demand for a company’s solutions. This role involves strategic thinking and planning as well as aesthetic sensibility.

Skills You Need

What technical skills do you need to work in project management?

Project Management Tools

Project management tools are the bread and butter of most project manager jobs, and you’ll need to get familiar with quite a few of them to be successful. Part planning tool, part means of collaboration, part to-do list and scheduler, these apps are powerful indeed. Examples of these tools include ClickUp, Monday.com, and Asana.

Resource Management

Without effective resource management, there would be no project management as we know it! As a senior project manager, you’ll become keenly aware of the link between resources and project success, and you’ll strive to strike the perfect balance between replenishment and consumption of critical resources.

Risk Mitigation

Risk management is another large part of most PM jobs. It may sound odd to focus on what might go wrong when getting started on a project, but savvy PMs know that an ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure — by understanding what could go wrong, they’re better able to prepare and respond if and when it does.

Quality Control

As a project management specialist, you’ll be tasked with ensuring that each successive deliverable, as well as the entirety of the project itself, is up to snuff. Since the buck stops with you, make sure you understand how quality control processes work and that you’re familiar with key QA applications and tools.

Collaboration and Teamwork Skills

Tech is a team sport, and nobody knows this better than an IT project manager! In PM positions, your communication and time-management skills are paramount — you can’t keep your team on track without them — so make sure you’re ready to keep everyone in the loop while simultaneously making the trains run on time.
